What our guests say

Welcome to The Caves of Laugarvatn

Just over 100 years ago, Icelandic families lived in these caves.

The caves were their home. They slept here, cooked here, raised their children here, and even welcomed two babies into the world — the last Icelanders known to be born in a cave. They built their lives into the rock itself. The caves were even visited by Kristján X, and today you can step inside and experience what life was like.

Walk into the caves, hear the stories, see old photographs, and take your time exploring. You’ll learn how people survived here with almost nothing but nature on their side.

You can even try traditional Icelandic fermented shark and a shot of Brennivín inside the caves for a truly authentic Icelandic experience.

This isn’t a big flashy attraction. It’s quiet, authentic, and deeply personal. Most visitors leave saying they didn’t expect the experience to feel so meaningful.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, go ahead and book your visit. We keep our groups small, so it’s best to reserve your spot in advance.

FAQ

Do I have to pay for parking ?

Nope, parking is completely free for guests. We have a large lot right next to the entrance.

Do I need any special clothing or gear?

No special gear needed. Just wear your usual outdoor clothes. It can be a little cooler inside the cave during summer, so we recommend bringing a light jacket.

How is the access to the caves?

It’s a short walk, about 100 meters from the parking area. The path is natural, a bit grassy and earthy, but manageable. There’s a gentle slope of around 12 degrees. Most people have no problem walking up. Our oldest visitor so far was 92 years young! The caves are not accessible by wheelchair.

Do I need to book in advance?

We recommend booking ahead to make sure you get the time slot you want. If you’re nearby and want to join, just stop by. We’ll do our best to fit you in if there’s space.

How do I get to the Caves of Laugarvatn?

We’re in the middle of the Golden Circle, between Þingvellir National Park and the town of Laugarvatn. From road 365, called Lyngdalsheiðarvegur, turn onto road 367, Laugarvatnshellavegur, and follow the signs marked "Caves." You’ll find us at the foot of the mountain.

How long is the tour?

The tour usually takes about 25 to 30 minutes, including the food tasting if you choose that option.
